NEA-Alaska/Retired is governed in much the same way as other NEA-Alaska locals. We have four officers (president, vice president, treasurer and secretary), three Directors-at-Large, and four Region R directors who serve on our Retired Board. We are eligible to elect two retired members to the NEA Representative Assembly (RA), have four seats on the NEA-Alaska Board of Directors, and have four members on the State PACE committee.

Nominations for NEA-Alaska Region R Directors and for the NEA-Alaska/Retired Board of Directors positions opened September 1 and close at Delegate Assembly on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.

Nominations for Retired NEA Representative Assembly State Delegates open September 1 and close at Delegate Assembly, currently scheduled for Saturday, January 17, 2026.

You do not have to attend Delegate Assembly to run for office.

The following positions you may run for are as follows:

NEA-Alaska/Retired Officers

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer

NEA-Alaska/Retired Directors-at-Large – 2 two-year positions

NEA-Alaska Region R Directors (state board) 2 two-year seats and 1 one-year seat

*Region R Directors also serve as voting board members of the Retired Board of Directors

NEA-Alaska/Retired Representative Assembly Delegates – Region R (two 1-year seats)

All of our elections are conducted online and supervised by NEA-Alaska. Just like Delegate Assembly, you can nominate yourself. Then it’s just a matter of completing a short biography and completing the form. If you would like to run for any of our open positions, you can link to the NEA-Alaska Elections page here: https://neaalaska.org/members/statewide-election

Each position has their own responsibilities; here are a few:

  • The President is the spokesperson of NEA-Alaska/Retired, prepares agendas and presides over all board meetings, and organizes and supervises elections as necessary. The president also monitors and approves expenditures and appoints members to committees. The president also attends Delegate Assembly and chairs our Policy Assembly and caucus meetings at DA.
  • The Vice-President, in the event of a vacancy in the office of the president, succeeds to the presidency and performs the duties of the president. The vice-president works with the president and treasurer preparing the budget, assists the president representing member interests, and carries out duties the president may delegate.
  • The Secretary keeps minutes of all meetings, assists the president with communications, and maintains and updates terms of office and vacancies.
  • The Treasurer maintains our financial records, assists the president and vice president in preparing the budget, and presents investment and budget reports at board meetings.

You can find detailed descriptions of each position in our official bylaws, which can be found here.

If you’ve ever considered running for an NEA-Alaska/Retired office, now is the time. We welcome new leaders and the energy and ideas they bring. I will say, these positions are often competitive, so a bit of campaigning (reaching out to old friends and colleagues and encouraging them to vote, for example) helps. So please consider running for an NEA-Alaska/Retired office. We need you!
