Hey NEA-Alaska/Retired members living in or near Fairbanks, Alaska: Guys Read Gals Read, Inc. needs volunteer readers for their kids’ reading program. Guys Read Gals Read, Inc. is a nonprofit in Fairbanks whose goal is to get kids excited about literacy through visual storytelling. Volunteers read aloud at local Fairbanks schools from late September through mid-November during students’ lunch break. The time commitment is flexible, from a one-time 30-minute session to multiple sessions over several weeks. You may select a time and co-read with another volunteer. Books are thoughtfully preselected, with summaries available, and an orientation is provided. This program is well-loved among students and provides ample support for volunteers. NEA-Alaska/Retired Volunteers do not have to complete the district’s volunteer packet paperwork, since there will always be a district staff person in the room.
