NEA-Alaska/Retired Board of Directors Policies

ANNUAL MEETINGS

NATIONAL

Leadership (Spring), NEA Retired Annual Meeting (June), Retirement and Benefits Forum or Trustee Meetings – Reps elected or reps appointed by the NEA-AK President or the NEA-AK/R President will be reimbursed for transportation, hotel and per diem (at the NEA-AK rate for meals not covered by the meeting). Registration fees will also be reimbursed.

The state delegates from Region R to NEA RA will be automatic voting delegates for candidates at the NEA Retired Annual Meeting, in June, preceding RA.

Members attending these meetings will report to the Board and submit an article for the next NEA-AK/R newsletter.

STATE       

Delegate Assembly – The nomination form for candidates from Region R will be published in the spring newsletter.  The deadline for receipt of the nomination form will be set by the Board at the meeting immediately following DA and published with the form.

The number of delegates allowed is determined by the ratio specified in NEA-Alaska Bylaws. The president is an automatic delegate. If there are more nominations than delegate positions, an election will be held. (see election section)

NEA-Alaska will reimburse airfare to a maximum of $500 and will pay for cab fare to and from the airfare or mileage for delegates who drive. NEA-Alaska/R will reimburse a maximum of three nights hotel, based on double occupancy and up to $30 per day for a maximum 3 days for food. Attendance at all caucus meetings and all floor meetings is required to receive reimbursement. Vouchers, with dated receipts, must be submitted to the President of NEA-AK/R within 30 days following the end of DA.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors will meet at least three times per year, fall, following DA and spring.  Whenever possible, meetings will be held in conjunction with NEA Alaska Board meetings to save transportation expense for Region R directors on that board.

Expenses for travel and per diem, up to $30 per day will be reimbursed upon submission of a voucher, with dated receipts, within 30 days of the meeting. Overnight expenses and car rental will be reimbursed only on pre-approval of the President. Any board member residing outside the state shall attend by teleconference.  Meeting dates shall be published in the September newsletter and following each meeting actions of the Board will be published in newsletter.  Members of the Board will contribute articles to the newsletter as requested.

Newsletter

The newsletter, the primary means of communication with members, will be published quarterly. The newsletter will accept no ads. The editor of the newsletter shall be reimbursed for mileage (at the NEA-Alaska rate) and any meal expense on the day the newsletter is composed. Expense must be submitted to the President within 30 days of the day they are incurred.

Budget

The President shall prepare a 2 year budget, on the same cycle as the NEA-Alaska budget, and present it at the fall meeting.

Membership

A membership chair shall be appointed by the President at the fall meeting. Mileage expenses of the chair will be reimbursed upon submission of voucher within 30 days of the day they are incurred.

The membership chair and the Board will establish a Membership Cadres in the major locals to aid in the enrollment of newly retired NEA-Alaska members, active members to pre-retired and already retired members. A membership plan will be developed each fall, including plans for pre-retirement seminars. Board members are expected to be active in the enrollment of new members.

Membership enrollment allows payment by cash, check or credit card. Pre-retired and life retired membership dues may be paid in, at most, four installments over a period not to exceed four months.

Member Engagement

Member engagement Cadres shall be established in Juneau, Ketchikan, Mat-Su, Anchorage, Fairbanks and Kenai. Each cadre of retired members will have the following responsibilities:

1. To work with other retired groups to educate legislators on priority issues as determined
by the Board of Directors.

2. To assist the Board in the enrollment of newly retired NEA-Alaska members and in the
update of current enrollment lists.

NEA-Alaska/Retired shall work with the NEA-Alaska Board of Directors and staff to accomplish priorities set by DA.

Recognition and Awards

A member of the NEA-Alaska/Retired Board of Directors who has served at least 4 consecutive years shall receive recognition in the form of a gift when he/she finishes a final term and leaves the Retired Board of Directors.

Other recognition and awards shall be presented as the Board sees fit.

NEA-Alaska/Retired shall participate in the nomination of members for awards of NEA-Alaska and NEA.

Facebook and other Social Media Policy

The purpose of the NEA-Alaska/Retired Facebook page is to provide our members with a casual and open forum to receive, share, and comment on information relevant to the mission of the association, which is to provide a voice for retired educators to expand and protect benefits, and to enhance quality of life.

All postings and contributions to the NEA-Alaska/Retired Facebook page are subject to review by page administrators.  Any posts considered inappropriate or not conducive to the desired climate of the forum will be deleted. Repeat violations will result in a member being blocked from the site. The following are examples of items that will be deleted immediately:

  1. Inappropriate language, any language that would not be acceptable in Alaska schools;
  2. Offensive or aggressive posts with regard to NEA-Alaska/Retired and its member;
  3. Sexual content or link to sexual content;
  4. Solicitations of commerce;
  5. Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity;
  6. Content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party.

Only the president of NEA-Alaska/Retired or his/her designee may speak for the Association.   Similarly, only members of the NEA-Alaska/Retired Board may establish an NEA-Alaska/Retired presence on a public social network (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, etc.).

When staff or elected leaders communicate through social media, unless authorized to speak on behalf of NEA-Alaska/Retired, they are representing themselves.

No personal details regarding an individual’s NEA-Alaska/Retired membership should be posted in this, or any other, public forum.  To avoid compromising confidentiality, all questions or concerns regarding an individual’s NEA-Alaska/Retired membership should be addressed to NEA-Alaska/Retired directly at (907) 274-0536 or (800) 996-3225 toll free, via e-mail at nea.ak.retired@gmail.com.
